Okinawa Memories
Initiative

Connecting with, learning from,

and listening to Okinawa.

A
Where The Power Of Storytelling Unites Us All
The Okinawa Memories Initiative (OMI) is a student-led public history and community-engaged research project, co-directed by Alan Christy, Alice Yang, and Noriko Aso, with a mission to uplift a historically underrepresented and silenced culture.

For almost ten years, the project has included multidisciplinary field research in Okinawa (excluding the pandemic years) that has involved archival research, film production, mounting exhibits, recording oral histories, and immersing ourselves in the history, culture, and natural setting of Okinawa.

At OMI, we believe history must be done with and within the community.
