Dr. Charles Gail was an aspiring photgrapher and dentist who was stationed in various regions of Okinawa from 1952-1953. Due to previous restrictions from the Japanese government before World War II and ongoing restrictions from the U.S. military occupation in the Post War era photographs of everyday life in Okinawa are limited. As such, this collection offers a unique view into the Okinawan culture and landscape.
This collection consists of roughly 153 [IS THIS THE RIGHT NUMBER?] hi-res photograph scans of the Gail photographs and are viewable on this website. Some of the subjects of these photographs include Okinawan daily life, businesses, pastoral scenes, maritime life, portraits, architecture, and sacred sites. This collection comes to OMI courtesy of the Special Collections Department of the McHenry Library at the University of California at Santa Cruz.
